Thank you for visiting the fan fiction and fan art information/guidelines page!  We encourage you to try for anything you like, so good luck and have fun!

First off, you can submit your fan fiction. For those of you who do not know what fan fiction is, read on down to find out.  To start out with, this will be a general, free-write sort of thing, just to get us started.  Even if you’ve never written fanfic before, we encourage you to give it a try.  It doesn’t have to be anything extraordinary, just as long as you do your best and have fun.  However, we do have a few very minor limitations and restrictions.

We ask you to please keep the writing appropriate.  You should be able to tell if you’re crossing a line or not.  If we do find any content to be too inappropriate, it will not be posted on the website.  I.e.: gay characters.  We ask you to limit the gay characterizations to Dumbledore, and at that don’t push it.  But honestly, Jo didn’t give us any insight, so we may as well do it ourselves!  Anyways, moving along….

There is not much strictness on the length of your writing.  If you feel like attempting a drabble, have at it.  More power to you.  As far as too much, well… don’t write a book or anything… or at least, don’t send it to us, if you do.  Put it this way: if your writing were going to be put into a Harry Potter book, don’t give us any more than like a chapter or so worth.

All writing must be completely your own.  No taking credit for what someone else did, or sending in something that was written by anyone else but you.  Write your own fan fiction.  Please.

So get writing, and have fun!  Remember to include the title of your fanfic in the email, and please send in all entries to Ashley@harrypotterdictionary.com.  You may include  a/your name if you like, but if you would not like to be  recognized, just say so in the email and your name will not appear on the website.  Note this:  if you do not let us know in the email that you would prefer to go anonymous, either your name or your email address will be next to your fanfic, depending on which one appears as the sender in the inbox when we receive it.

As soon as we start receiving entries, we'll make a fanfic page and post it!

What is fan fiction?

Fanfic is any form of writing continued on by the fans of, well… anything really.  Books, movies, t.v. shows… you get the idea.  Fanfic is especially popular among fiction (obviously), and even more so in fantasy, and in our case, you write about Harry Potter.

You can write about any scenario that could have taken place in any of the Harry Potter books, or before the time period of the Harry Potter books, or in the post-epilogue period after the Harry Potter books, etc… You can use characters, locations, untied loops, assuming alternate endings/situations to any given scene, ALMOST ANYTHING.  You don’t even have to be realistic.  At all.  Assume any possibilities.  It can be very serious, or absolutely hilarious.  Just as long as you somehow incorporate some type of thing relating to info in the Harry Potter books.

A drabble is an exactly 100 word story that is often used among fanfic communities.  It follows all the same rules and what-not for regular fan fiction, only you have to have exactly 100 words.  Some people find that harder than it sounds, others find it easier.  Give it a try and see how you like it.  This type of fan fiction is often fun if you have a very, very brief idea, that you can just elaborate on for 100 words.  Simple enough, really.  If you have a drabble, you can send it in, and it will most definitely be posted on the website.  Depending on how many people enter drabbles, we may eventually create a page just for drabbles.

For the artists, you can also do fan art.  Any fan art you may happen to have, or would like to create, go for it.  Just scan you art and attach it in an email to ashley@harrypotterdictionary.com .  Again, we ask to keep it appropriate, and we ask you to do it yourself and be original.  It’s mainly the same guidelines as the fanfic.  The winner’s work will be shown on the home page, and again at the top of the Fan Art page.  And again, no entries will be rejected.  Please follow the same rule as above for your display name, and we'll get it up!
